Our nation has been through many changes throughout the years, from segregation, , fighting through the civil rights movement with a great leader such as Martin Luther King J.R., to now having an African American president; Barack Obama. Some the the benefits we have today because of this experience is we now treat everybody equally, also how to take great actions with out using violence. Another benefit is knowing that that there is still hope for a better future for ourselves and the next generations as long as we have strong leaders such as Barack Obama and Martin Luther King  J.R.

Looking back from when there was slavery and segregation to the present times, our country has seen many differences and we made it through all the hate and discrimination. In our lives today, we have grown to accept every other person as themselves and for who they are. As MLK once stated “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” This dream of his is now reality within our country. The greatest example would be shown now by our most recent presidential election. For the first time in all of American history, we now have an African American president, Mr. Barack Obama. This is a great benefit thanks to the black American experience. It proves in yet another way that there is no longer the discrimination we once had.

After Martin Luther King J.R.’s great leadership there have been many protests and organizations of people coming together to stand up for what they believe in, which in many of them have resulted in no violence. As MLK emphasized “Let us seek not to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred” also that “We must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into physical violence.” This had helped form protests which eventually became successful. With that strong leadership today coming from Barack Obama, this too can be still be possible. As Barack Obama says in his speech “A More Perfect Union” “I believe deeply that we cannot solve the challenges of our time unless we solve them together.” This sentence can stand for a lot, but can strongly fit for protests. By stating that we can solve our problems together is having people work together and if that does happen, more than likely there won’t be any violence involved.

One other great benefit to our country is knowing that there is still hope for a better future for us now and our next generations. This hope can turn into reality as long as we stay strong as a nation. Obama clearly states “What we have already achieved gives us hope, the audacity to hope, for what we can and must achieve tomorrow.” Basically we can make our society improve s long as our hope stays strong and we all come together to make this possible. A great example of this would be the times of the Civil Rights Movement. If the African Americans would have given up hope for what they believed in then we wouldn’t be where we are today. “We refuse to believe that there are insufficient funds in the great vaults of opportunity of this nation,” was a great line spoken by Martin Luther King which strongly speaks for the hope of our nation.

Therefore, after all these years, through the trials and tribulations  many people have fought through  is what set our nation to where it is today. Our African American history is what helped lead our country to being the great nation it is today.
